One afternoon, we turned a random corner and discovered a tiny café serving the most fragrant matcha we’ve ever tasted, an accidental highlight that perfectly captured Kyoto’s magic: deliberate beauty and unexpected joy living side by side.
Hakodate, on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, felt like another world. Cooler air, ocean mist, and the hum of fishing boats set the tone. We rode the ropeway up Mt. Hakodate for a panoramic view that made us fall silent.
Spending the afternoon making pirozhki in a tiny Russian café and visiting temples highlighted the profound influence of Russian culture from a time when only the Hakodate port remained open to the world, funneling in European influence in a way you don’t see in the rest of the country.
